Iwai Persona 5 Royal Confidant Rank Guide
The Social Link system returns in Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal. This time, they are referred to as Confidant links. By improving your Confidant relationships, you unlock bonuses and a special fusion tied to the Arcana (The Hanged Man in this case).
Iwai, the store owner who supplies the Phantom Thieves with firearms, is also a confidant. Representing the Hanged Man arcana, he offers more than decent skill unlocks and becomes a friend in your Phantom Thieves journey. Iwai is the social link you need to improve for powerful gun modifications. Additionally, you get boosts in your Proficiency stat from time to time when hanging out with him.

These contribute to a meter that levels up your Confidant rank. The higher the point total, the faster you progress through the ranks.
Keep in mind that you need to have a Persona of the Hanged Man Arcana with you to receive maximum points. Phone call follow-ups are exclusive to Persona 5 Royal and provide additional affection points. These will not appear in the original Persona 5.
Rank 1:
- After 5/6, and the event in the airsoft shop with the ‘package’, talk to Iwai with rank 4 (dauntless) guts to start the Hanged Man cooperation.
- Unlocks Starter Customization. This allows you to tweak your guns for battle.

Who Is Munehisa Iwai
Munehisa Iwai is a supporting character and Confidant in Persona 5 Royal, representing the Hanged Man Arcana. Intimidating, heavily tattooed, and perpetually serious, Iwai is the owner of Untouchable, the airsoft shop in Shibuya that provides weapon customization. Although he initially seems intimidating and shady, Iwai’s story involves themes of kindness, redemption, and fatherhood. By building the Iwai Social Link, you can access advanced weapon customization options and enhanced gear.
Iwai is a former member of the Yakuza. After leaving the dark underworld behind, he started his airsoft shop. Despite his past, Iwai has tried to live a quieter life and protect those close to him. This especially goes for Kaoru, the boy he claims is his son.
At first, Iwai is distant and guarded. He doesn’t trust easily, and it takes time for Joker to earn his confidence. However, once the bond is formed, you start to uncover his past and the truth about Kaoru’s identity.
The Hanged Man Confidant Story
Iwai is not Kaoru’s biological father. Kaoru is the son of a woman Iwai once loved, who died as a result of his criminal activities. Iwai took in Kaoru and raised him out of guilt, aiming to give him a better life away from crime. However, Iwai’s past catches up when the Tsuda Group begins threatening him. Tsuda, an old acquaintance, blackmails Iwai into making custom guns for illegal deals. To protect Kaoru, Iwai agrees to a deal with Tsuda.
Kaoru uncovers Iwai’s shady dealings and confronts him. Torn between protecting Kaoru and coming clean, Iwai struggles but is encouraged by Joker to stand up to Tsuda and reveal the truth. Ultimately, Iwai rejects the criminal world. He chooses to raise Kaoru honestly, despite facing the consequences of his past.
