Who Is Hifumi in Persona 5 Royal

Hifumi Togo is introduced as a highly accomplished professional Shogi player, already making a name for herself. She attends Kosei High School, the same school as Yusuke Kitagawa. Her talent for Shogi is undeniable, and she possesses a sharp, analytical mind, applying intricate strategies and tactical foresight to the game.

While Hifumi is a public figure in the Shogi world, frequently featured in magazines and interviews, she harbors a deep internal conflict. Her calm and elegant demeanor during public appearances hides a vibrant, theatrical side that emerges when she is fully immersed in a Shogi game or truly comfortable. During her matches, she often visualizes the Shogi pieces as warriors in an epic battle, complete with dramatic internal monologues.

The core of Hifumi’s struggle lies with her mother, Mitsuyo Togo. Hifumi’s father is ill and bedridden, making her mother the sole financial provider for their family. Mitsuyo sees Hifumi’s Shogi talent not as an end in itself, but as a means to an end: a path to greater fame and financial stability. She actively pushes Hifumi into modeling, interviews, and other publicity stunts, attempting to market her as an “idol” or “princess of Shogi.

Hifumi loves Shogi for the game itself, the strategy, the challenge, and the beauty of the moves. Her mother’s actions force her to prioritize public perception and financial gain over her true passion and integrity, leading to significant internal turmoil. Her mother even goes so far as to orchestrate “fixed matches” for Hifumi to ensure her fame continues, a secret that deeply troubles Hifumi.

Hifumi and the Phantom Thieves

Joker meets Hifumi at Kanda Church after hearing about her from Yusuke. You approach her for Shogi lessons, and she initially agrees with the intention of using you to practice new strategies. As their Confidant ranks up, Hifumi slowly opens up to Joker, revealing the intense pressure she faces from her mother and her true feelings about her career and public image. She shares her desire to be the first woman in the professional Shogi ranking league purely on her own merit, without the manufactured fame.

In the Mementos Request: “Upstaging the Stage Mother” of her Confidant, Hifumi learns that her mother has arranged another fixed match, and the truth about her past manipulations begins to spread within the Shogi world, harming Hifumi’s reputation further. Overwhelmed by this, Hifumi expresses her despair.

Joker and the Phantom Thieves must venture into Mementos to change the heart of Mitsuyo Togo’s Shadow (Lilim) in the Path of Akzeriyyuth. The Shadow represents Mitsuyo’s distorted desires for fame and recognition through her daughter, exploiting Hifumi for her own vicarious glory. Upon changing her heart, Mitsuyo comes to realize the error of her ways and begins to support Hifumi’s career more genuinely, focusing on her talent rather than exploiting her image.

With her mother’s change of heart, Hifumi feels a huge weight lifted. She gains the courage to confront the fixed match scandal, taking responsibility for her part (even though she was largely a victim) and reaffirming her commitment to Shogi on her own terms. She resolves to continue playing and striving for true mastery, free from external pressures.
